چکیده

Given the current demographic trends and future growth projections, as much as 60% of the global population may suffer water scarcity by the year 2025 [9]. In addition to water scarcity, water quality deterioration is expected to intensify in resourcepoor countries in dry areas, due to human activity and climate change. It is projected that water scarce countries will have to increasingly rely on alternative water resources such as wastewater to narrow the gap between water demand and supply for agriculture [16,18,19]. There are large gaps between developing and developed countries as well as lowand high-income countries for managing wastewater generated within their boundaries. High-income countries on average treat 70% of the generated wastewater, followed by upper-middle-income countries (38%), lower-middleincome countries (28%), and low-income countries, where only 8% of the wastewater generated is treated [31]. Wastewater treatment and use and/or disposal in the arid and semi-arid regions of developed countries, such as western North America, Australia, and southern Europe, are motivated by stringent effluent discharge regulations and public preferences regarding environmental quality [13]. Treated wastewater is primarily for irrigation, given the increasing competition for water between agriculture and other sectors [31,34]. In developing countries, wastewater treatment is limited, as investments in treatment facilities have not kept pace with persistent increases in population and the consequent increases in wastewater Manzoor Qadir United Nation University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH)

Reuse of wastewater at the San Juan de Miraflores stabilization ponds: public health, environmental, and socioeconomic implications.

The large-scale reuse of untreated domestic sewage for irrigation is commonplace in many arid and semiarid zones of Latin America, as a result of increasing population pressures, water shortages, and protein shortfalls. Twenty per cent of the land is arid or semiarid, having only 5% of the water resources of the Region; but this land supports 60% of the population (367 million people in 1983-I)...

Upgrading Wastewater Treatment Plants Based on Reuse Demand, Technical and Environmental Policies (A Case Study)

Reclamation and reuse programs are an indispensable part of integrated water resource management, particularly in arid and semi arid regions. Yet, the feasibility of sustainable application not only is relied on design, operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants, but also could be influenced by the economical and environmental aspects of reuse demands. This study is aimed to illus...

Agrometeorological aspects of agriculture and forestry in the arid zones

The arid zones of the world are all characterized by a large deficit of rainfall in relation to the potential evapotranspiration. Their distribution around the world is governed by the interaction of global atmospheric circulation patterns, the distribution of land and sea, and local topography. Countries that have substantial areas with arid conditions belong to very different groups in terms ...

Validation of air freezing index (AFI), for determination of frost penetration depth in typical arid and semi-arid zones of Iran

Depth of frost penetration is one of the main indices in agriculture, civil and transportation engineering. Soil temperature is a function of several factors including: topography, solar radiation, air temperature, moisture content and other physical properties of soil such as thermal capacity, coefficient of heat conductivity, and specific heat. The main objective of the present paper is to de...

Livestock Management in the Arid Zone: Coping Strategies

The arid zone encompasses land that has an imbalance between precipitation and losses through evaporation. Globally, arid zones comprise large part of many countries in the mid-latitudes in both the Northern and the Southern hemispheres. Both Australia and Iran are countries with a large arid zone. This negative water balance in the arid zone affects the type of land use in these countries. At ...
